Tinea Pedis - Commonly known as Athletes's Foot

It's not the most pleasant topic to discuss, but we all experience it from time to time.

The cause of Athlete's Foot is often:

  • Going barefoot in communal showers and changing areas

  • Warm, moist and dark environments like your shoes which are ideal for fungal growth.

  • Not drying in between toes after bathing.

  • Excessive sweating.

To prevent athlete's foot, the most crucial advice is to make sure your feet are thoroughly dry before putting on your socks and shoes after washing them.

Make sure to switch your footwear frequently. Shoes need 24-48 hours to dry thoroughly, so wear different shoes each day. To speed up the drying process, remove the insoles. Additionally, loosen the laces and fully open your shoes to allow air circulation. Opt for trainers with ventilation holes.

Tight shoes that compress your toes can lead to increased moisture accumulation, promoting fungal growth. Opt for shoes with a wider and deeper toebox to allow air circulation between your toes, and select footwear crafted from natural materials. Additionally, remember to change your socks daily.

To prevent leaving dead skin around for others to pick up and avoid picking up any fungus, it is recommended to wear flip flops in communal areas. Additionally, never wear other people's shoes or slippers.
